An Elder Speaks

New Name From the Mouth of the Lord
By Lindsey Baker, Jr.

“and the gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shall be call by a new name which the mouth of the Lord shall name: (Isaiah 62:2)

“and ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chose: for the Lord God shall slay thee, and all his servants by another name.” (Isaiah 65:15)

“Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.” (Isaiah 56:5)

All of these prophecies were fulfilled in Acts 11:26. During the first ten years after the church was established, this new name was not given to God’s children, because the Gentiles had not been converted and this name was to be give after they had seen the righteousness of God.  The members of the church were called brethren saints and disciples, but these were not new names.

The bible says in Acts 11:25, “Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul.”

Why go for Saul? Saul was to become Paul and to become the chosen vessel to bear the Lord’s New name to the Gentles.

“and when he found him, he brought him unto Antioch and it came to pass that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people.  And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” (Acts 11;26)

This name was give by the mouth of the Lord, through the apostle Paul.  It was not a nickname given by outsiders.  Isaiah said God would do it.  Even the Greek word for called in Acts 11;25 mean divinely called or called by the mouth of God.

The name God intended for His children was given by the mouth of the Lord, and everlasting name which shall never be cut off.  ALL human names should be discarded, and we should be delighted to call ourselves Christian and nothing else added.
