Worship
An Article by Jack Smith
December 7, 2003

God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24

To worship “in spirit “ is to pour out the feelings and emotions of one’s hart in sincere devotions unto God. Habitual observance of laws and regulations does not necessarily mean that such is worshiping “in spirit.” Acts of worship, regardless of the regularity of such performances, must be done in all sincerity, from the heart, with a meaningful purpose. We do not know what degree of honesty and sincerity characterized the worship of the woman at the well, along with her people, but we do know that Jesus said we MUST “worship him in spirit and in truth.” Our spirit must be in tune with God to reach the throne of his divine grace and mercy. Worldly distractions, which would take man’s spirit from acceptable worship to God, must be avoided. To take the “heart and spirit” out of worship is to make vain worship.

Acceptable worship unto God must be not only “in spirit,” but must be “in truth.” Regardless of the sincerity of the soul in worship, man must direct his worship unto Jehovah according to God’s own authorized way and manner.

Let us devote our worship toward the type of worship God seeks, in spirit and in truth.
