Isaiah
55:1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and
he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy
wine and milk without money and without price.
2
Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and
your labor for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently
unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul
delight itself in fatness.
3
Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall
live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even
the sure mercies of David.
4
Behold, I have given him for a witness to the peoples, a
leader and commander to the peoples.[ASV]
The above passage from the book of
Isaiah is From God Himself. He was extending “the invitation”
to those children of Israel who had recently returned from
captivity. As one could imagine these were weary, hungry,
thirsty, faint and poor souls who now were yearning for water,
wine, milk, honey and bread. [Staples of life for Old
Testament Israel]. These items were often also synonymous with
those who were said to be with God.
As captives the children of Israel
had no means to purchase these items. Now they were free,
their futures were not certain. But imagine being told come
take of the water; and to those with no money, come and buy
and eat. Without money they were told you can buy wine and
milk. However, they were also told, don’t spend money on
things that will not be satisfying (things that are not bread,
such as false religion).
They were told as they obeyed God
words (incline your ear), their souls would live, and they
would never thirst (John 4:14) or experience hunger (John
6:35) again.
This was a very exciting offer to
post exiled Israel, but even more attractive to those today,
both Jew and gentile. God makes the same offer to the entire
world today. An offer made possible by the salvation that came
through Christ’s blood and God’s love and grace. As written by
the Apostle Paul, “Grace to you
and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly
places in Christ:” [Ephesians 1:2-3, ASV]
God made
a covenant with the children of Israel upon their
exodus from Egypt, but He also let them know this covenant
would change (Jeremiah 31:31), which the Hebrew writer
confirmed did happen (Hebrews 7:12; 8:6-13).
The everlasting covenant promised
in Isaiah 55:3, refers to the covenant God made with David,
“When thy days are fulfilled, and
thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed
after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will
establish his kingdom.
He
shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the
throne of his kingdom for ever.” [2 Samuel 7:12-13, ASV].
The seed of David who established God’s kingdom was no other
than Jesus Christ. The name David in fact was applied to the
Messiah in a broad and symbolic way in many instances in the
biblical prophesies
(including Jeremiah 30:8-9, Ezekiel 34:23-24; and Hosea 3:5 ).
To make it perfectly clear the fact that Christ actual
fulfilled this prophesy Peter in the book of Acts wrote that
David was “both dead and buried,
and his tomb is with us this day” (v.29), and in
verses 30-36, he confirmed Jesus was raised from the dead to
sit on David’s throne. The apostle Paul also reiterated this
same message in also the book of Acts (13:22-23) when he wrote
“ I have found David the son of
Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will”.
For all of those who have yet to
find the Lord, listen to God’s invitation through the prophet
Isaiah: “Seek ye Jehovah while he
may be found; call ye upon him while he is near:”.
Also the address for His kingdom is in found in Matthew
16:18-19 [ASV] “And I also say
unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will
build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail
against it. I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of
heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound
in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.”
