An Elder Speaks
Christ and the Church
(Ephesians 5: 21-33)
By Lindsey Baker, Jr.

This is a
great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the Church
(Eph. 5:28)
Christ is
pictured as the husband and the church as His wife. Paul
illustrates this with the relation of husband and wife on
earth. The husband should “love his wife as Christ loved the
church,” and the wife should submit to this loving husband “as
unto the Lord.” The husband is “the head” of the family but
must be willing to give himself for it. The husband rules the
wife by love (Eph. 5:25, 33). The relation of the wife to the
husband is like that of the church and Christ. The relation
is a close tender relation in which there is no bondage but
freedom because the service is that of the heart.
There is an
interesting analogy between Adam and Eve and the church:
(1)
Adam was created.
(2)
Adam was put to
sleep.
(3)
Adam’s side was
opened and the price, which was paid for his wife, was a rib
was removed.
(4)
Eve was created
using that rib.
(5)
Eve was given to
Adam as a bride and she took his name.
(6)
Children were born
to them and so all people on earth have come from Adam and
Eve.
Concerning
Christ and the church:
(1)
Christ came to the
earth.
(2)
He was put to sleep
in death.
(3)
His side was open
and the price which He paid for His church came forth (Acts
20:28)
(4)
The church was
established and named for Christ (Roman 16:16)
(5)
Children are born
into the family of God and so all Christians on earth are
equally related to Christ and His church.
Every
Christian is a member of the church, the body of Christ. When
God saves anyone, He adds him to the church (Acts 2:47).
Christ did not add any one to a denomination, since there were
no denominations in those days. Christians were added to the
great heaven born, spirit-filled, blood-bought institution for
which our Lord gave Himself and to which Christ gave Himself,
and to which He adds each saved person.
