Former Atheist Now A Believer

Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the famed atheist leader, was finally buried in an unmarked grave in Texas. She was best known for a case that had been filed on behalf of her son William that led to the landmark 1963 Supreme Court case banning prayer in public schools.

O’Hair was, in her own words, "the most hated woman in America." She faced the indignation of countless souls for her quest to remove God from the classroom. She further fueled that hatred by founding a group known as the "American Atheists."

Now, in a twist, we know that she believes in God. How is that possible? We can base that affirmation upon some truths of Scripture:

In the account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), we learn that the rich man, after burial, found himself in torment. This clearly indicates consciousness and an existence beyond the grave. The truth of consciousness after death is affirmed in this account.

On the day of Pentecost, the apostle Peter rehearsed David’s prophecy concerning Christ, that the Lord’s soul was not left in Hades (Acts 2:27). It signifies a consciousness during that intervening period between His crucifixion and His glorious resurrection.

If Ms. O’Hair could speak to us now, I am sure that she would have a different message than the one she preached in life. How tragic that she now knows the truth, but can’t do anything about it. Although she made her choice, and now faces
the consequences for it, you still have the opportunity to make the right one. Thank God, in His abundant mercy, that you still have time to prepare yourself for eternity.

As you visit with us here at the church of Christ, please take the time to ask questions about HOW man is saved ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE. TODAY, truly is the day of salvation.
